Fahrenheit 451 Setting In the society that Fahrenheit 451 takes place in, books are illegal. Why is it that books are illegal in their society. What do they have against books. Montag, a fireman is not a fireman that you would think of. Firemen in their society are not people that prevent fires,they make the fires. Their job of a fireman is to burn down homes that contain books within them, but Montag is a fireman that loves books and doesn’t understand why the society has a hate for the books. The reason why books became illegal in the society is because books had offended minorities in their civilization. So burning them made people not being able to read the books offensive content. Since so many people have found something offensive about every book, the society just said to burn all books. Another reason why they said to burn books it because they wanted everybody equal. What they mean is that book made people feel dumb because other people read them and were smarter as a result so the society just said to burn the books to create equality.
