In The Phantom Tollbooth, Milo was a boy who didn't know what to do with himself. One day, the Phantom Tollbooth appeared in his room. He drove through it in a tiny car and traveled to the Kingdom of Wisdom where he developed a love for learning. Faintly Macabre, the Which, teaches Milo the power of choosing the right words, the Soundkeeper teaches Milo the importance of sound, and the Dodecahedron teaches him the power of numbers. When Milo and his companion, Tock the watchdog are locked in a prison cell, they meet Faintly Macabre, the Which. She tells them the decline of the Word Market in Dictionopolis. She used to decide which words to use and which not to use. Then, the people started to decide what words to use on their own. The Which put up signs that said: An Ill-chosen Word Is the Fool's Messenger. The markets started to fail like the Great Depression in the 1930's. Then she put more signs that said: Speak Fitly or Be Silent Wisely. She replaced it with another sign that said: Silence is Golden. People stopped speaking and buying words. It was ironic because the valley was completely silent. The reason is that the Soundkeeper took away all the sound. When Milo tried to talk to Tock and the Humbug, there was no sound. People had signs that said: LISTEN LOOK CAREFULLY AND WE WILL TELL YOU OF OUR TERRIBLE MISFORTUNE. They explained with a blackboard that the Soundkeeper once ruled over the Valley of Sound. Then, the people started making unpleasant sounds. The Soundkeeper decided that the valley should be silent because nobody appreciated the sounds she made. Without the sound, nobody knew what was going on. The Soundkeeper indirectly teaches Milo why sounds are important when the Valley of Sound is
