The Fall of Saigon

When you think back to the 1970s’ history of the United States, what immediately comes to mind were the Paris Peace Accords in 1973, Nixon’s resignation in 1974, and the Iranian Revolution in 1979 which were all extremely important, politically- life-changing moments, and ultimately created an entirely new approach to America’s defense, protection and society. The events described above are all interrelated in the grand scheme of the military’s operations during the 1970s. However, what may not initially come to mind is nonetheless just as important, is the Fall of Saigon taking place in April of 1975.

The United States tried to take as many innocent Vietnamese people with them back to America, but of course it was nearly impossible to evacuate all. The ordeal became messy, South Vietnamese civilians were giving monetary exchanges and there were under the table operations in order to gain their freedom which included a passport and visa out of the country. Americans affiliated with the United States or the Southern Vietnamese government were likely to be the first priority. American troops had been slowly making their way out of Vietnam following the agreement in hopes to putting an end to the war and all of the violence. Though the Paris Peace Accords tended to serve as an agreement of peace between the United States and North Vietnam, there was still unfinished business especially on the North Vietnamese’s part, conquering the South and reforming it to a Socialist Republic which was governed by a Communist Party. The North was relentless, and whether they signed a peace treaty or not, they were still going to battle towards their goal of having complete power of all of Vietnam to reign their powerful
