With strong opinions on each side, some deemed it necessary while others think it was a waste of our time, resources, and people. I strongly believe that the Vietnam War was a needless fight that had easily avoidable consequences, because our young soldiers were not properly trained for that type of environment, it was not our battle to fight, and lastly it caused extreme civil unrest between American citizens and their government. In addition to not being adequately trained to fight, the soldiers were given orders to search and destroy towns as well as bomb villages. Secondly, the Americans did not have a secure reason to get involved in the war. The government told the citizens that we were there to help the people and to stop the rise of communism. Even though we were over to help them, we were fighting the South Vietnamese war for them, it was our men that were dying in combat and they were lacking in giving support. Near the end of us being in a war-zone, Nixon put in place “vietnamization” where we helped to train the South Vietnamese to start fighting their own battle against North Vietnam and the Viet Cong hiding in the south.Lastly, the Vietnam war was the first war to be broadcasted across America, which got the nickname of “the living room war,” which meant when families turned on the TV at night, they were seeing the very violent and deadly war that was being fought across the globe. This and many other factors such as the draft and the government's lies to us, is what divided the nation like no other event has. Many people protested and tried to evade the draft by getting married, going to school, or fleeing the country; as such, during these protests many people lost their lives
