Immortal Diamond expresses that in order to experience religion and spirituality there has to be a death of “the false self” or ego. There is a part of us that must be found and a part of us that must be let go. According to Rohr, “The False Self is energized by problems and by self-created goals almost moment by moment; the True Self (the soul) needs and feeds on a different fuel” (Rohr, 80). The False Self is more of a negative energy, getting in touch with the True Self is the ultimate goal. The True Self desires to embody God’s grace and serves God in everything, because it is a discovery of God. The True Self returns reshaped just like Christ did when he resurrected. This process promotes a better existence, a journey that will refine happiness. We are all created to live an image of God. Once one has made contact with the True Self, the soul is transformed and intimate with everything. The world begins to make sense again, Rohr stated “we know that God is not a person in the way we understand human persons” (Rohr, 74). God is beyond our imagination, God is in our soul, and spiritual life. Faith is constantly being tested for the divine purposes. Most importantly this transformation should change your life. According to Rohr, “The very quality of what we call life is that when we are in touch with our True Self our existence reveals itself as somehow eternal, gratuitous, endlessly overflowing, and inherently trustworthy” (Rohr, 152). The True Self is spiritually related the holy spirit deep within our heart. This is the meaningful teaching of Immortal Diamond. Rohr said, “Diamonds are deeply hidden under miles, pounds, and pressure of earth and time, but like the True Self, like the thread, like the presence itself, they are there, and now YOU are there too” (Rohr, 196). This is said beautifully, we have the armor we need to embody God’s grace, it is just a matter of reaching for it ourselves. God is not forced on us in anyway, in the Bible God asked us to follow him because he is the way. Reflecting on Immortal Diamond, Rohr deeply expressed the connection of the False Self and True Self.
