The film differs quite dramatically from Kafka's book, and these differences change the economical, societal, and familial relationships. Secluded and confined to a single solitary room during the Victorian era in the early 1900’s the transformation of a nuclear family unfolds. The impact this has on the each individual within the family structure is not only reminiscent of the rigid societal family structure, but as I will illustrate further, it also is conducive to the impact on the families socioeconomic class and interpersonal relationship transformations that take place unexpectedly during the interpretation of this fictional book in contrast to the movie Metamorphosis by Kafka. In the book Metamorphosis the main character Gregor who, is the son of a modest family makeup of the typical family structure with a mother, father, son, and daughter experiences a horrendous time in transitioning from human to insect. During this time Gregor feels an extreme sense of social responsibility to be the sole provider for his parents. The family structure and dynamics appeared to be stern during this era, which is quite similar to the authors upbringing and his experience with expected economical, societal, and familial roles. The initial impression when reading the book is a man who was the sole provider and primary caregiver for his entire family, and somehow woke up to becoming an insect preventing him from providing. The emotions Gregor felt at the shame of not being able to make it into work to continue his traveling salesman job, which appeared to be lucrative. His struggle to understand the limitations of his insect body, and his families’ reactions to the debacle reaffirm societal restrictions based on gender and economic status. The mother wanted to almost act as if Gregor had died, and she began to rid some of Gregors’ furniture. Gregor began to feel a sense of isolation, but had become accustomed to not showing himself out of shame. The father from the beginning thought the insect his son would harm the family, and attempted to kill him. The mother stopped the father, and reminded him of the fact that Gregor’s still their son. Eventually the sister and other family grew tiresome of caring for him; therefore the cleaning woman assisted in the care much to Gregors’ dismay. Uniquely, in the book the cleaning woman was not afraid like the others in the family, nor did she put up with his heronry behavior. However, in the movie the sister takes the role of caregiver and maid with no mention of other people in the home. In the end, when you are faced with a horrendous challenge; the reaction of the people closest/including your own is different than what you expect and societal, economical, and familial outcomes cannot be predicted nor are they rigid in structure as one would assume. Although, the mother had a difficult time accepting the appearance of an insect, and Gregor expected a different response from his family. The final result is that economical success within the family structure is not dependent upon gender roles or abilities deemed necessary by
