In 1854, slavery became a lifestyle in the South; farmers relied on these human beings as their sleepless servants. Mary Ann Shadd Cary wrote concerning the situation of fugitive slaves and their opportunities in the north. She used personal anecdotes and experience as a guide to help other freed or fugitive slaves. In her writing Why Establish This Paper? Mary Ann Shadd Cary utilized figurative language and meaningful correlations to persuade her audience ardently to establish the utter significance of her newspaper.
In the early 1800s, more opinions were being voiced about the treatment of the African-Americans. An educated African-American by the name of David Walker voiced his opinion about his communities need for equal liberties and all of the hypocrisy that was being ignored by others. For instance, in a paper, it was said, “‘The Turks are the most by bears people in the world – they treat the Greeks more like brute than human beings.’ And in the same paper was an advertisement, which said: ‘Eight well-built Virginia and Maryland Negro fellows and for wenches will positively be sold this day, to the highest bidder’” (Walker, 1829, p.177).
Many minority groups were vulnerable to enslavement placed upon them by white Americans throughout the 19th century. In the episodic autobiographies Narrative of the Life of Fredrick Douglass, An American Slave written by Fredrick Douglass and Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl written by Harriet Jacobs, both authors present the physiological manipulations associated with slavery. Douglass's and Jacob’s experiences suggest that slaves endured a continuous treatment of brutality, loneliness, and sexual abuse. Slave-owners deprived slaves of positive human qualities because they (slave-owners) became divested from their sense of identity. The dehumanizing institution of slavery caused slave-owners to conform to social roles instituted by society and forced slaves to suffer from learned hopelessness.
In both Bruce’s speech and Douglass’ article, both advocate for the acknowledgement of African-Americans in society. Towards the middle of Bruce’s speech, he states, “We determined to wait until such time as an appeal to the good sense and justice of the American people could be made.” This state provides a similar message to that of Douglass, also stating, “…based upon loyalty, liberty, and equality, must be determined one way or the other…” Both authors believe in the power African-Americans to rise above the adversities placed upon them by the oppression the South and society. Furthering the points regarding the realization of African-Americans, both leaders advocated for faith to be placed upon African-Americans by Congress and society. Bruce expressed his viewpoint regarding faith in the statement, “…they [African-Americans] have attested in blood their courage as well as a love of liberty…”
In the “Columbian Orator”, author Caleb Bingham includes stories regarding both black and Native American men as they share the commonality of poor treatment at various times in history. Black men received harsh treatment during the time of American slavery; many slaves were taken from their homelands in Africa and eventually sold into slavery in America. Living under an owner entailed constant labor and harsh conditions. Examples showing the barbarous treatment turn up throughout this story, when the enslaved man stands up to his owner and portrays his view on life in America. He states, “What have you done, what can you do for me, that will compensate for the liberty which you have taken away” (Bingham)?
Document B explained how an English visitor viewed the problem. “We shall not make the black man a slave; we shall not buy or sell him; but we shall not associate with him,” (Doc B). Abolishing slavery was an improvement, but not associating with the black population should have been considered unjust. For example, blacks could not share railway cars, steamboats, hotels, restaurants, schools, hospitals, prisons, or cemeteries with other races (Doc B). Furthermore, during the 1860s, everyone was judged based on their education, but blacks were judged by their history as slaves.
In the 1700-1800’s, the use of African American slaves for backbreaking, unpaid work was at its prime. Despite the terrible conditions that slaves were forced to deal with, slave owners managed to convince themselves and others that it was not the abhorrent work it was thought to be. However, in the mid-1800’s, Northern and southern Americans were becoming more aware of the trauma that slaves were facing in the South. Soon, an abolitionist group began in protest, but still people doubted and questioned it.
Douglass points to the vast unwillingness from the group of whites that refuses to fully perceive and accept African-Americans as deserving and equal citizens of the nation. Based on his personal experiences as a slave, Douglass is abundantly aware that the battle to abolish slavery is not an easy task. For the first twenty years of his life, he witnessed firsthand the abject cruelty of that institution in our country. Tactfully, Douglass seizes this opportunity to publicly highlight the unmerited and coarse differences in the treatment between the whites as opposed to the blacks living in the United States during this time period. He makes a “powerful testaments to the hypocrisy, bigotry and inhumanity of slavery” (Bunch 1).
“Letter to My Master, Thomas Auld” explores Frederick Douglass’ view of slavery and Thomas Auld, his former slave master, in a smart and emotionally charged letter originally written in 1848 and published in the abolitionist newspaper North Star. Throughout the letter, Douglass uses his own experience as a slave to drive his views, often using sarcasm and a dark recognition of his trials to drive his own view of slavery; that slavery should be abolished and that it is inhumane and cruel. Douglass’ decision to publish this paper in the North Star allowed him to bring to light his experiences to push other readers of the newspaper towards an abolitionist stand point by bringing his first-hand accounts of slavery forward and explaining, at times
Group Essay on Frederick Douglass “That this little book may do something toward throwing light on the American slave system”, and that Frederick Douglass does in his eponymous autobiography. Douglass throws light by dispelling the myths of the slave system, which received support from all parts of society. To dispel these myths Douglass begins to construct an argument composed around a series of rhetorical appeals and devices. Douglass illustrates that slavery is dehumanizing, corrupting, and promotes Christian hypocrisy. Using telling details, Douglass describes the dehumanizing effects of the slave system which condones the treatment of human beings as property.
With freedom coming, some slaves were still loyal to their masters. Yet, the slave masters still consider slaves to be the bottom rail of society. The bottom rail was considered the “lowest level of America’s social and economic scale” (Davidson & Lytle, p. 179). From this, derives a bond with the reader that pushes their understanding of the evil nature of slavery that society deemed appropriate therefore enhancing their understanding of history. While only glossed over in most classroom settings of the twenty-first century, students often neglect the sad but true reality that the backbone of slavery, was the dehumanization of an entire race of people. To create a group of individuals known for their extreme oppression derived from slavery, required plantation owner’s of the South to constantly embedded certain values into the lives of their slaves. To talk back means to be whipped.
In Chapter 3 of A Different Mirror by Ronald Takaki, he attempts to understand the hidden origins of slavery. In this essay, I will describe and analyze how Takaki uses race, ethnicity, historical events, and famous people to have a better understanding of slavery.
