As the 18th century was coming to a close, women 's fashion took on some changes. In art and architecture, many things from ancient Greece had become fashionable and this had an effect on fashion too. Skirts became narrower and waists became higher. Gowns had less lace, frills, and ruffles. Some fashions in the early 1800 's made women look much like statues of Greek goddesses!
The 1900-1909 was an interesting and intriguing part of history, both worldwide and here, in the home country Evil and selfish ambitions were constantly battling the good and selfless discoveries and inventions. The world was gearing up for the First World War and the United States was plagued with, segregation and disease. Fashion was at a peak, creations were being made left and right, music was changing drastically, and politics were going haywire. Fashion during the early 1900s was often described as ‘One long Edwardian summer’(The Last Age). Women were wearing dresses that showed more and more of their figure.
During the 1920s women gained a freedom that they had not known before. Women were wearing new and shorter fashion styles (document 4). Before the 1920s women’s fashion included floor length dresses that were usually reworn every day. Wearing the same dress every day was seen as a normality during this time and owning too many dresses could have been considered frivolous. In the 1920s however many women owned multiple dresses that they did not have to wear every day or even week.
Culture Trends in the 1920s The 1920s opened an economic recession followed by an influx of immigrants and cultural and racial tensions in the USA, which created an atmosphere of intolerance. The fear that people had toward the Germans and Communists spread even to the immigrants, which triggered a general increment in racism and nativism. A lot of Americans saw immigrants as a threat to stability, and they faced a lot of prejudice to protect the old stock Americans. Also, to restrict immigration the Ku Klux Klan reemerged.
Before the twenties, the traditional woman's lifestyle included wearing corsets and dropped layers of clothing. “In breaking away from conservative victorian values, flappers created what many considered the ‘new’ or ‘modern’ woman. The dresses were sleeveless, knee length, hung straight, and were loose from the body. They were so pretty and made all of the girls look like queens. Not only did the girls wear a dress they also wore shorter skirts with pleats or gathers. They would also wear tight strips of cloth around their chest so it made them look younger and so that they could have a better appearance. The low waist dresses with fullness at the hemline were very popular for a girl who loved to dance because it compliments their heels for when they’re dancing.
After World War I, women’s fashion took a turn and prospered into an exciting and new vibrant style. Society previously held tight boundaries on how women should dress. There was no law to the way they could dress, but simply that their morals were tighter and they had an unspoken, common knowledge before the 1920s of how women should dress appropriately.
A lady of 1920 would be astounded to realize that she would be recognized as "another lady. " Numerous progressions would enter her life in the following ten years. Huge changes for ladies occurred in governmental issues, the home, the working environment, and in instruction. Some were the consequences of laws passed, numerous came about because of recently created advancements, and all needed to do with changing states of mind toward the spot of ladies in the public eye.
People saw actors and actresses in movies and immediately wanted to be like them. New trends were started by movie stars. They created new ways of fashion that inspired other people to be like them ("Mass Culture: Radio, Music, and the Movies."). Many different fashion fads were made throughout the 1900’s because of these Hollywood stars. Flappers were women who began showing more skin than they have before.
1920s Fashion The 1920’s was a dynamic influence on men’s and women’s fashion. Moreso the impact woman had on society and how their influence manipulated the fashion of the 1920s. Jazz,World War I, prohibition, the 19th Amendment are just some of the factors that contributed to the dramatic shift in the culture that we still admire today. During this time ‘the fashion landscape shifted like tectonic plates” (“retro”), everyone wanted to be in style and have the newest and glamorous clothes. Designer brands and unique hairstyles is still a lifestyle that we still see in today 's society and is growing.
In the 1920s, the world was recovering from the end of World War I, and the excitement of a peaceful era. The 1920s was also known as the Roaring Twenties and the Jazz Age. During the 1920s, America got new inventions, a booming economy, a soaring stock market, and upbeat music. Many families could finally afford automobiles for the first time. People began to eat a much wider variety of foods such as Kool-Aid, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, Wonder Bread, Popsicles, and Wheaties Cereal.
Today in the United States, we honor our country for being “the land of the free,” but does everyone in the U.S. feel like they actually live in “the land of the free?” Compared to our past we have improved our prejudice mindset, but not nearly enough. The 19th amendment, allowing women to vote, leads us to believe women are equivalent to men. Students in history classes today, learn about how women gained equal rights as men in the 1920’s, but women are nowhere near close to being considered equivalent to the male gender. Feminist movements have exposed to the country how unfair women and young girls are treated.
Gowns of the 1920 's carried out the drastic figure themes of daytime dresses, however it was separated from the formal dress by the sleeve. Evening gowns feature the sleevless with bare arms that were wrapped in silk shawls, furs, caplets. They were made of luxurious fabric such as silks, velvets, taffetas and chiffon. Dresses were designed to move while dancing, they were inserted with beadings.
1970’s Fashion Earth day was first celebrated in United States in 1970. Hippies were primarily the ones who got Earth day passed by the government. Disco was very popular as well; People would go to nightclubs and strobe lights and mirror balls would be everywhere, the latest 70’s hits would also be playing. The Vietnam War, The Battle of Civil Rights and music affected a lot of the fashion in 70’s.
