Another thing that caused fright in the eyes of the American population was the Covid lockdowns. People were in their homes and worried about being in their homes for a long periods of time so they panicked similar to the bank situation. People went out and bought all the toilet paper they could (which gives a false sense of security) and caused a nationwide toilet paper shortage and people had to go to multiple stores just to get a few rolls. Lopez goes into talking about where Covid came from and
Tim O’Brien can have you relate to fear so much that fear that he had in that book that you can relate to it. He was able to show this when he was driving in his hometown. “Beyond all this, or at the very center, was the raw fact of terror. I did not want to die. Not ever.
In the short story, “The Landlady,” Roald Dahl creates suspense, which makes you think about how and why some of the things happen. One example of how Roald Dahl creates suspense is when the narrator said, “He hadn’t even had time to take his finger from the bell-button - the door swung open.” That creates suspense because she opened the door so quick, and it leaves you wondering how she opened it so quick. Another example is when the landlady mentioned, “You did sign the book, didn’t you?... That’s good.”
The claim/thesis that I have picked is that Esperanza has a variety of female role models in her life. Many of those role models in her life are in a trapped abusive life. They come from a poor family and are not the cleanest people in the town. But they have something all in common and that is that they all want a change. Some want their change in a different way than the others, some want someone else to change their life, and the others want to change their lives themselves.
My curiosity of fear originates from today society, words we would hear within the book are all too similar to things we hear now. In modern society, we hear it every day happening both in Australia and the US, the phrase “We are in danger of being swamped by Muslims’ similar to the society of Salem, the town
“The Fall Of The House Of Usher” by Edgar Allan Poe and “ House Taken Over “ by julio Cortazar, both Gothic Literatures explaining the lives of those who are too afraid to live, when they believe in buying themselves happiness. In both stories, the setting is based off two extremely large homes that are being taken care of by siblings, both male and female. They end up excluding themselves from each other's lives and begin to follow a routine based of the house. Both keeping you guessing at the end. Did they disappear?
The House on Mango Street creates an interesting point of view of tragic experiences involving Esperanza and her life. This story expresses interesting thoughts about Esperanza as a normal teenage girl. Esperanza wants to experience new things and she is trying to define herself. She thinks about many things and can't keep focused on what she wants. Like most teenagers, Esperanza is lost and makes stupid decisions sometimes.
Everyone in front of me were yelling, screaming, and trying to run away. But as I continued nothing came or tried to scare me probably cause I was walking slow and looking around until the end when i had confidence it was over this man popped out from top in front of me. The transformation created fear because it was going smooth until they scared me. “House Taken Over”, “The Fall of the House of Usher”, and “Where is Here” all use transformation to make the story better so it goes from calm and smooth until something goes terrible or the story gets scary. Joyce Carol Oates’ “Where is Here” transformation scares readers because the story goes from being a nice happy day to a curious and scary day.
Fear plays a big part in everyone’s lives. While not everyone will admit it, everyone is scared of something. There is a lot that isn’t known about the world and everything in it. For some this is a tool that can be used to develop horror in literature as well as many other things. “The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown.
Magical Realism is a literary or artistic genre in which realistic narrative and an acceptance of magic in the real world. Julio Cortazar’s “House Taken Over” is a good example of magical realism, because the house is taken over by something that is unusual and supernatural. “The first few days were painful, since we’d both left so many things in the part that had been taken over” (pg.40). I chose this sentence to show that the thing that took over was really powerful like magic but was being used as dark magic in this story. Therefore, “House Taken Over” is an example because the story used spirits that were powerful and was scaring the people that lived in the house.
In " House Taken Over”, the author Julio Cortazar creates an unimpressed tone based on the dialogue between the main characters in the story. The characters in the short story get faced with many terrifying events, yet remain unbothered. For instance, after the characters had noticed the noises in their home, Irene ¨Picked up her needles again and stated ¨we´ll have to live on this side¨ (Cortazar 40). Instead of leaving the house and getting somewhere safe, the characters in the story show no emotion. the narrator informed Irene of the mysterious creature, and continued to live an ordinary life and just isolated themselves.
”This excerpt is a key part in the authors suspense. The reason it is so key is because it includes such great imagery. Imagery is the use of words and phrases that appeals to the 5 senses. From this quote you can imagine Cujo running out of the garage and attacking Donna, which makes you on the edge of your seat to see what will happen next.
