“Prey” was written by Richard Matheson. This story focuses on a woman named Amelia who bought an ancient Zuni doll named He Who Kills and is said to have a Zuni hunter’s spirit inside of it. The common horror theme that this story has is Body Horror. The fears usually associated with the body that are evident in this story are the fear of physical pain, the fear of mortality and the fear of losing control of one’s own body. Amelia’s fear of these three specific body horror anxieties led to her change over the course of the story, as she is physically attacked by the doll she changes from being a spineless woman to a violent person which eventually leads to her body being invaded by the murderous Zuni hunter spirit. From just throwing towels, she began throwing heavier solid things like a vase, a lamp and a pan. Her determination to save herself from the doll increased along with her fear of dying but this only made her be more persevered to fight back as she accepts that the Zuni doll is a real threat to her life and this is a matter of life or death. The fear of mortality is intensified by having the threat hard to escape from. The Zuni doll is very fast and small, making it hard for Amelia to run away from it and fight it. It becomes even more difficult when it is wielding a small sharp knife. This intensified anxiety made Amelia overcome her spineless characteristic in order to save herself from the threat. Amelia’s struggle for her life continues until she finally makes up her mind to kill the doll to put an end to everything. After she threw the doll into the broiler, she sacrificed her back in order for the doll not to escape it’s death even though her back was burning from the heat of the oven as well as stated in page
