New York City’s Federal Hall National Memorial originally known as City Hall is a historical site, home of many historical turning points. New York was the first capitol of the United States under the Constitution, which made Federal Hall the First Capitol building. George Washington’s Inauguration, the Stamp Act Protest, Judiciary Act and proposal of the Bill of Rights are a few of many events that have significantly impacted American Government that have taken place at Federal Hall. Because of the abounding significant events associated with the Federal Hall National Memorial it can be stamped the Origin of American Government. On May 26th, 1939 the Federal Hall National Memorial became a part of the National Park System. Federal Hall is alongside many of the other great National Park System attractions, which include the Statue of Liberty, Castle Clinton, and Morristown Historical Park. The museum has an extensive number of exhibits that highlight its importance. Tourist who visit the museum go on tours and watch videos learning about the history of the Federal Hall and the role it has played in American Government. On the steps of the building guest are welcomed by a bronze statue of George Washington symbolizing the first and his first inauguration of the United States; the statue is located by the John Quincy Adams Ward. Once inside of the memorial the bible Washington swore on is preserved and put on display along with a piece of the balcony he stood on during his inauguration. On September 11th, 2001 the Federal Hall protected over 300 people from the devastating attacks on the World Trade Center. Today the memorial is used to educate people on the democratic values and virtues of the United States. Federal Hall Memorial may not have as much political meaning as it did when the Constitution was written, but it certainly is the birthplace of American Government.
