1. Compare the increase in the females versus males in terms of the number under correctional supervision.
a. According to the reading the number of female prisoners increased a significant 23 percent while the number of male prisoners increased 15 percent. Meaning that the population of male prisoners went from “1,246,234 to 1,438,602” and the females prisoners went from “85,044 to 104,604.” As you can see with the numbers it shows a spike in the number of prisoners under correctional supervision. In the reading you can also see how they say that the number of female offenders has increased at a rapid rate, which would be 118 percent while for males it is 70 percent.
2. What is the general overall goal of a prison classification system?
a. The goal of a prison classification system is to classify offenders is to place prisoners into the correct categories. When categorizing female prisoners the numbers of points given decreases when compared to males due to the previous problem of “overclassification”.
3. List some of the special problems faced by the female inmates?
a. Some issues faced by the female inmates are health care, vocational training and work opportunities, drug and alcohol abuse, potential sexual abuse from staff, or simply having problems relating to their children.
