Angela Grimke introduces the horrors of slavery and racism through sensuous imagery and parallelism in her anecdote, emphasizes the need for women to act through an exclamatory sentence and friendly persona, and ensures women that their participation is effective through historical evidence in her speech “Bearing Witness Against Slavery.” As an angry mob of anti-abolitionists rage outside the lecture hall, Grimke must continually battle for her audience’s attention. She holds their focus with an intense pathetic appeal when describing her firsthand experiences with slavery and racism to establish the idea that excused racism in the north relates to empowered slave owners in the south. This becomes an ethical appeal when she calls upon women
The reading this week brought to my attention that historic events have a way of repeating themselves. In Folklore of the Freeway, Eric Avila explains that during the “Freeway Revolt” there were different ways that communities organized and the types of issues they were fighting against. These issues and organization structures mirror current day protests. Likewise, the connections between how women were treated with respect to protests during the “Freeway Revolt” and the recent Women's match are astounding. In the context of these two events, white women are seen as saints for fighting a fight that doesn’t affect them, while women of color as ridiculed for making a big deal out of nothing.
In 1989, women’s rights were on fire, especially in the eyes of feminist Peggy McIntosh. At this time, she created an article titled “White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack” that inspected just that: white privilege. As expected, she forms an argument that argues against those who do not recognize their all-too-common- white privilege. After looking into the structure of “White Privilege”, a few obvious aspects make the piece successful in what it does. Overall, the format of the article allows for ease of a compelling reading.
In the year of 1873, Susan B. Anthony had been arrested for casting an illegal vote at the last presidential election. This time period was known as the Women’s Rights Movement. Many women were beginning to acknowledge that they were treated unfairly by society’s standards against them, and had began to stand up for themselves and their fellow women. At this time, women were not allowed to vote. Most were stay-at-home mothers because men did not find them suitable for most jobs the men accommodated, and society discouraged them from even getting a real education.
In September of 1979, Audre Lorde, poet, spoke about the impossibility of dismantling the patriarchy through oppressive means. The black feminist woman, Lorde, who has cancer at the point of this speech, uses ethos, pathos, and logos in order to guilt the audience into making a change of how black feminists are represented. Ethos is the building of the author's credibility in order to become more persuasive because people tend to believe people who they deem likable or respectable. “I agreed to take part in a New York University Institute for the Humanities conference a year ago, with the understanding that I would be commenting upon papers dealing with the role of difference within the lives of American women: difference of race, sexuality, class, and age. The absence of these considerations weakens any feminist discussion of the personal and the political.”
The disregard for black women is an issue that is slowly becoming a topic of discussion. In addition to Malcolm X’s acknowledgement that “The most disrespected woman in America, is the black woman. The most unprotected person in America is the black woman. The most neglected person in America, is the black woman”, Crunktastic writes in the Crunk Feminist Collections about her experience being a black woman and being disrespected. Both Boynton and Crunktastic write pieces that encourage men to put aside their feelings of entitlement and begin to respect black women.
White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack”, she notes that the whites in America are taught not to recognize their white privilege as males are taught not to recognize male privilege. Whites were also taught to see racism as something that puts people at a disadvantage rather than something that puts people at an advantage as well. Therefore, McIntosh decides to unpack her invisible knapsack and list 46 privileges she was granted because of her skin color. In Audre Lorde’s essay, she argues that feminists must critically examine their own use of dominant concepts. She also mentions that academic knowledge is based on an institution that has excluded people of colour.
In every relationship there is always an unequal relationship with the significant other. In the short story The Chaser by John Collier, Alan Austen who’s the main character in the short story goes to an old man to buy a love potion so this girl named Diana would fall in love with him. The basic principle states that men and women have a relationship that is unequal or oppressive. In the short story “The Chaser”, it shows feminist criticism by feeling unconfident, buying a love potion, and Diana’s treatment of Mr. Austen. My first main point of the story that touched on feminism was when Mr. Austen feeling unconfident.
Despite being perceived as “out-of-place,” despite regularly addressing white audiences, Wells refuses to compromise her truth, instead constructing a rhetoric rooted in evidence, confidence, and assertive optimism. Throughout Crusade for Justice, Wells establishes and delineates her rhetorical situation. Obviously, she is aware of the prejudice she faces as an African American woman in the United States; however, she further defines her topic, purpose, and audience so that her actions cannot be misunderstood. The most obvious aspect is her topic: particularly at the beginning of her autobiography, a majority of her speeches and writings discuss the reality of lynching in the United States, or as she writes, “An excuse to get rid of Negroes who were acquiring wealth and
Not approaching the traditional look on feminism, but looking at the internal approach of gender and races roles, she crafts an argument to explore pleasure rather than solely pain. In the first chapter of this work, Archives of Pain she utilizes seminal works of Black Feminist to collectively analyze how traditional Black feminist theory sees the dominant representation of Black women. Through the lens of bell hooks, Patricia Hill Collins, Janell Hobson, Cox, Carla Williams, and several others Nash presents the common argument amongst these Black Feminist writers is that visually the dominant representation inflicts violence of the Black female body. With a background in sociology, Nash breaks down this chapter in four sections and explains representation as pedagogy, as temporal practice, as metonymy, and as a site for recovery.

The scene that occurred after Civil War, in a hospital, according to Lorde, it is a clear example of how Black women were and, are still, neglected from the American society. Although one may argue that the anecdote of when Lorde was a child, which took place on a subway train in New York, a white woman jerked her coat away from Lorde. The reason to why the woman acted in such way is because she was disgusted by Lorde being Black. Lorde’s subway anecdote is a similar experience to being racially profiled, because just as Professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. was arrested and perceived as a criminal for being Black, Lorde as a child, felt the same way. The woman considered her a criminal by communicating her horror and demonstrating her disapproval,
In the 1980’s black women are faced with a lot pressure in society, Because women of color are both women and racial minorities, they face more pressure in which lower economic opportunities due to their race and their gender. This pressure is reflected both in the jobs available to them and in their lower pay. Also because they are women of color they are likely to be the giver of the house and also within the families. Through the use of anecdotes,rhetorical questions, anaphora, ethos and metaphors, "In The Uses of Anger: Women Responding to Racism, Audre Lorde argues that women of color need to respond to racism with anger spurred from their fear and that not a bad thing depends on how anger is portrayed.

In this text, Crenshaw builds on the concept of intersectionality which proposes that social categorizations such as gender and race are intertwined and have great influence on one another.
Anne Bradstreet (1612 – 1672) has been a long-lasting leading figure in the American literature who embodied a myriad of identities; she was a Puritan, poet, feminist, woman, wife, and mother. Bradstreet’s poetry was a presence of an erudite voice that animadverted the patriarchal constraints on women in the seventeenth century. In a society where women were deprived of their voices, Bradstreet tried to search for their identities. When the new settlers came to America, they struggled considerably in defining their identities. However, the women’s struggles were twice than of these new settlers; because they wanted to ascertain their identities in a new environment, and in a masculine society.
