Fences is a play written by August Wilson which is set in 1950s Pittsburg. This play explores the experience of a particular African-American family living in an age of discrimination and an up and coming civil rights movement, revealing, at the core of the characters’ behaviorism, a dynamic between a secluded black community and the domain of white supremacy surrounding it. It is in that setting, the entire story of their strife, grievances, and conflict unfolds. They live in an America where the African-Americans are deprived of the rights and liberties that whites have.
