Fences Lighting Approach Paper The play Fences by August Wilson is a play centered around the life of Troy, a hardworking man who is thick in size and skin. The play is grounded in realism reflecting the complications of being a colored person in the late 1950’s. The play in one word is about relationships, more specifically it’s about hard relationships. When Troy’s tough love becomes morally grey, his relationships start to slip through his fingers and Troy begins to find himself distant from the one he sacrificed everything for. However, I would not purely rely on realistic lighting, because that would be boring. While reading the play, I realize that the script is almost always Troy driven. There is only one point in the script that isn’t driven by Troy. The show is about him. Since the show is about Troy, I want the lights to reflect that. I want to use lights to elevate a moment and emphasize Troy’s feelings. The script isn’t an action-adventure, but a script that is very dialogue focused. I would like to use selective vision to help get rid of any distractions other than the actors and their words. I would also like to use color to put more stress on moments that repeat throughout the script. The changes in color would mainly be for when death is mentioned and when blue is mentioned. A big moment in the script is the end of act I, where Cory stands up to his father for the first time. The reason why this is such a big moment is because it’s the only moment of the script that isn’t driven by Troy at all. At this moment Cory changes the situation. Throughout the play the colors mirrored Troy, but during this moment I would like the lights to show Cory’s emotion. This is to show that he has taken control of the play at this point. The show is no longer about Troy during this moment, this is why I want to emphasize this
