Was Troy a devoted Husband? What is the differences between a provider and a husband?

The story fences are known for its complicated and convoluted relationship with its characters. This led a way for characters interaction to be interpreted in different ways. For example, Troy the main character, was a challenging character to understand. He claimed to love his wife and kids, however his actions in the story would differ. Throughout the story every action Troy made questioned his role as a good husband and father. Considering everything that happened in Fences, Troy Maxson worked hard to provide for his family and he was a devoted father but as a husband that opinion is left to the readers.

To begin with, as a man Troy is only as good as his weakness. Troy weakness derived from the fact that, he dedicated his life to endless labor providing for his family. The constant and countless years of labor, clouded his judgement, and made Troy feel as his life was boring meaningless. This is a major mark in the story, although Troy was a good baseball player in his past, he constantly misses points in his life that matters. …show more content…

Troy sees his family as weights that only brings him down, which eventually leads him to stray away from his wife and conceive and illegitimate child. This child forces Troy to come clean, about his affair. This is where readers are presented with what Troy thinks of his entire existence and unsatisfied life as a husband. When faced with the decision to stop the affair, he refuses, because he claims, that Alberta (the woman Troy is cheating on Rose with) is the only thing that gives his life
