Censorship of Textbooks With censorship being the topic of discussion, censorship is defined to be, ‘forcibly put an end to unacceptable topics’. One of the main reasons why certain things are censored is for the safety of the people. Is there a boundary to how much the higher power can censor without jeopardizing America’s known name, ‘The Land of Opportunities’? Or should everyone go on with their day and accept situations are the way it is for important reasons. Censorship has evolved throughout the centuries. For instance, free speech didn’t even seem logical to people—people were not allowed to think differently, whether that being religion, what they wanted to wear, or what they were even allowed to think. This idea of being ‘open to new ideas’, has only shown students of comparisons from each, and undermining their understandings of the scientific community. Another article establishes, “In 2004, however, Holt and two other publishers offered four new high school textbooks that lacked any information on family planning and disease prevention except through abstinence.” (Fighting Textbook Censorship) Since another action has been made, this has eliminated information of prevention of the effects of sexual relations. Both of these instances have only been made because of the school board’s religious beliefs. This shows that the government chooses to create a boundary around what the students in Texas learn. It has been said that textbook publishers chose to take out/add information based solely on what their demand from school boards’ are. With saying, this has caused textbooks to evolve into completely erasing or altering content that ethnic/religious/political/etc. groups might get offended by. An article claims that:

Textbook publishers’ goals are to keep their sales high. Often, the publisher will ask a writer to edit or remove material from an article because a particular group may object to it. These groups are usually from the far right of the political spectrum or religious groups, and may pressure school boards to reject texts that they disapprove of. Because publishers aim to please the school boards, textbooks depicting male and female genitalia or including the theory of evolution are often challenged and revised. (Book Censorship)

In order for textbooks to have a large market, their action to do so is to produce books that the customers will agree with and like. With the argument being, “to make textbooks only to better the customer”, creates a total prejudice with the content that school boards agree/disagree with and think other people should learn. Textbooks are the foundation of general information that creates a basis of the curriculum that the students will be learning. School boards are the decision makers that choose what students can
