In Harper Lee's classic “To Kill A MockingBird” A great scene is when Scout and Jem were in court when Atticus was defending Tom Robinson. Atticus demonstrates the use of setting diction (words) and pathos I think they learned that no matter how right you are, other people that don't like you well say that you're wrong. No matter how much evidence Atticus showed they weren't going to change the outcome of the trail.
Harper Lee’s novel To Kill A Mockingbird and Eugenia Coolliers short story “Marigolds” evoke the most empathy by showing the growth of morals like empathy and compassion in the characters. The dynamic characters are used to emphasize how a person can change while symbolism is used to show a deeper meaning in an object both are used by the authors to evoke empathy. To Kill A Mockingbird, a novel published in 1960 about innocence, compassion and hatred. A story about children living in a racist time period trying to get through living there childhood without being influenced by the bad customs. “Marigolds” by Eugenia Cooliers is a short story also written in the 1960’s about a learning compassion and turning into a woman.

In the novel, we meet Tom an African-American man accused of raping Mayella, a young white women. Atticus is appointed as Tom’s lawyer and this is Atticus’s closing statement. Atticus claims that there is no real evidence to convict Tom and he has done nothing wrong.

The mockingbird represents true goodness and innocence that should always be protected. Another character who shows loss of innocence is Tom Robinson. He is accused of raping Mayella Ewell but because of obvious evidence, he is innocent. In effect, he gets shot to death for being a kindhearted man who saw a girl in need of help and helped her with daily fixing’s around the house. He was an innocent man who had a family and a life, but that was destroyed because of the color of his skin.
In the book To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, the main character and narrator Scout recalls the events leading up to her brother Jem’s broken arm. Throughout the story, the two children come upon several mysterious acts of kindness. Little do they know that they are from the one person the childrenthey would least expect: Boo Radley. Boo is mentally challenged and stays away from the public. Though he scares many of his neighbors, he never does anything to cause other people harm.
After Atticus gives Jem and Scout their air rifles, he tells them they can shoot tin cans and bluejays, but not mockingbirds. “” … they don’t do one thing but sing their hearts out for us … it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird,”” (Lee 119).The mockingbird is supposed to symbolize Boo Radley and Tom Robinson. Both characters have been wronged for no reason. Tom and Boo just mind their own business, while the world bothers them. Later in the story, Calpurnia and the children have discovered a rabid dog, Tim Johnson, running about.
In the book “To Kill a Mockingbird,” Harper Lee uses negative connotation and vivid symbolism to persuade that being judged by an outward appearance or backstory can affect a person negatively and make the judgers feel superior. Lee uses an outstanding amount of characters to persuade this but some distinctive characters that she uses is Aunt Alexandra and the Cunningham’s. Lee also uses the Ewells and Tom Robinson to persuade her meaning. In chapter twenty-three Scout asks Aunt Alexandra if she can play with Walter Cunningham but Aunt Alexandra declines the request and does not give Scout permission to play with Walter. She explains why plus starts to judge Walter.

In chapter 12 of To Kill a Mockingbird, author Harper Lee uses the literary devices known as diction and imagery to develop the theme that there is a strong sense of racial inequality, and it takes development in one's awareness to fully grasp that reality. One of the many literary devices that are utilized to emphasize the theme throughout this chapter is imagery.
For example, the Tom Robinson case. Quoting Atticus, “The state has not produced one iota of medical evidence to effect that the crime Tom Robinson is charged with ever took place. ... The defendant is not guilty, but someone in the court room is.” I am using this quote as an example because this shows a perfect example of innocence. Tom Robinson didn’t do anything wrong; he was just accused of doing something because he was a negro.
The setting of the story is Maycomb County Alabama during the 1930s, a time when racism was at its strongest. The main characters who symbolize the mockingbird are Tom, Boo, and Jem. One demonstration of how the author Harper Lee exercises figurative language in To Kill a Mockingbird is when Walter Cunningham is being introduced, “Walter looked as if he had been raised on fish food: his eyes,... were red-rimmed and watery” (25). The metaphoric example portrays Walter’s physical appearance to that of someone having a poor diet producing a visualization of Walter in the reader’s mind. Mockingbirds symbolize innocence, and the idea of killing a mockingbird signifies destroying its innocence. In the book “To kill a mockingbird” by Harper Lee, many of the characters can be identified as mockingbirds. They are the innocent people who have been harmed or tainted by evil. This is usually due to inequality. In the novel, there are many examples of inequality.
In the story, the innocents are destroyed by evil, the “mockingbird” comes to represent the idea of innocence. Thus, to kill a mockingbird is to destroy innocence. Such as when Atticus says “Shoot all the bluejays you want, if you can hit'em, but remember it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird” (103). Another example could be when Boo stabs Bob Ewell to save Jem and Scout, which sheriff Tate decides to say that Mr.Ewell fell on the knife, so Boo won’t have to go to court.

In the novel it focuses on the fact that innocence, represented by the mockingbird, can be wrongfully harmed. There are two characters: Tom Robinson and Arthur “Boo” Radley that are supposed to represent the mockingbird. In the novel, Tom Robinson is the best example of a mockingbird because he is prosecuted for a crime he did not commit. Also, he was judged unfairly based on the color of his skin in his trial.
