In 2007, I, along with a few of my peers, founded the Little Lemon Drop Jr. Guild as a way to give back to our community. Since then, this nonprofit organization has raised thousands of dollars that has gone to support uncompensated care at Seattle Children’s Hospital. Throughout my middle school and high school years, I have been very involved with this group. When I had the opportunity to choose a service placement for this year, I immediately knew I would be doing my service through the Little Lemon Drop Jr. Guild because of my previous involvement with the guild and my passion for the cause the guild supports.

What makes a story enjoyable? Is it the plot? Or is it the methods the author uses to connect to the reader? Plot is a big thing, but it is the literary devices that bring the story together. In the three stories, “The Tunnel” by Sarah Ellis, “The Skating Party” by Merna Summers and “The Bicycle” by Jillian Horton all have unique literary devices to make each story more intriguing and to give them the feeling of being part of the story.
Competitive cheerleading has been my passion ever since I was six years old, but not until I became an athlete at Kansas City Athletic Cheer did I fall in love with it. Being a part of the highest level team at Kansas City Athletic Cheer, Platinum, meant that cheer would become my entire life. I lived for the hard practices, competing in front of thousands of spectators around the country, and most importantly being a part of something that was bigger than myself. This place was filled with coaches and teammates that unfailingly brightened my day. Whenever I had a bad day or just felt down, it was always my place to go to escape reality and release stress.
“So, Lesley.” My friend turned to stare at me with an expectant gaze. “Are you going to go?” How am I supposed to answer that question? What if nobody will end up going?
Do you ever really know when you will come face to face with a struggle? No, of course not. If you knew you would avoid facing them all together. In fact, given the choice between facing their own hardship or seeing someone else face their’s, no matter how noble an individual you claim to be, you would choose the latter. The Skating Party is a story that depicted a man’s struggles throughout life, seen through his fifteen year old niece, Maida. When faced with a dilema the character Nathan Singleton has to choose between his fiance or the woman he loves, in a battle against time where he can only save one sister.
Discourse conventions are guided by the type of genres within the discourse community. In the article by Chandler, they write, “genres tend to be based on the notion that they constitute particular conventions of content (such as themes or settings) and/or form (including structure and style) which are shared by the texts which are regarded as belonging to them” (Chandler). We can also apply this, not only to texts but also through the ways of spoken and digital communication that people within their discourse community use. My chosen discourse community is the U.S. Figure Skating Organization. Within this discourse community there are many different types of conventions used by members of the community and the organizers as well.
Tonya Harding: Figure Skating’s Biggest Victim I, Tonya, a biographical comedic drama directed by Craig Gillespe, is based on the life of controversial figure skater Tonya Harding, infamously known for her involvement in the attack on rival skater Nancy Kerrigan. The film explores central themes regarding classism, gender bias, destructive relationships, and femininity in both athletic and personal endeavors. Initially gaining notoriety for her impressive athleticism and standout choices in competitive skating, Harding was on track to become one of the strongest figure skaters of her time.
The Founding Era spans from the NHL establishment in 1917 until a large drafting for World War Two in 1942. The NHL was founded when it 's predecessor, the National Hockey Association was disbanded. It continued to thrive until 1942 when the numerous teams from the NHL were sold, broken apart and disbanded due to World War Two and the lingering aftermath of the Great Depression. The six teams that remained adopted a new moniker and the second era of the NHL began.
Imagine being so obsessed with owning a business, but needing to borrow some of your family members money but they will not give in. This is how Walter Lee Younger, Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun, feels because he wants to use a check that his mother is receiving from the insurance company after his father’s death. Walter, a selfish man with a wife and child, lets his shallow, naive, and ambitious nature interferes with his family.
Admissions Essay 2 Figure skating plays an important role in shaping my character and building skills for the future. Being able to perform gravity-defying jumps and spins on a thin blade requires more than just talent—it involves dedication and perseverance when in the face of adversity. As an athlete, I interpreted the saying “practice makes perfect” as pushing past my limits and training for several hours. Unfortunately, I ended up injured because I was pushing myself too hard and not resting. Two summers ago, I had suffered a back and knee injury that were major setbacks to my progress.
I have had the unforgettable opportunity to personally raise $1,400 for kids to go to summer camp, whose families could not afford it otherwise. I have worked at food drives, homeless shelters, and kid’s programs in my town, in hopes to make someone’s day a little bit better and ultimately make my community stronger. These experiences shaped who I am today. While I cherish the experience I had making a difference in my own town, I am ready to grow and leave a positive impact somewhere else in the country.
I became obsessed. There was always something about that crunch on the ice when I took that step into my cross-over, the speed of the game, the intensity, and the gift of being able to play alongside 20 of my brothers to achieve the common goal of doing something bigger than all of us. I opened that heavy entrance door for the ice rink and immediately felt that rush of eagerness to lace up the skates. With this in mind, I took a step onto that ice and my tryout debut was incredible. I was ecstatic feeling that all my hard work was starting
The sport that I came to the conclusion to use as my favorite sport would have to be Skate boarding. Skate boarding came out in 1958 and since that day people young and old get out there and shows their stuff. No matter how good or how bad you are.
Community service does not only have a profound impact on our community, but the impact it has on the individual people is even greater. The concept of community service has always been something that I grew up with, and now that I am older I better understand how important community service is for society. I have participated in community service activities. Starting in elementary school, I helped feed the homeless and rescue animals. Even with my wide range of volunteer experience, it was difficult to find an activity that would be meaningful and fulfill my thirty-hour obligation for my senior project.
