In the film CORRECTIONS/JAILERS SAFETY II, it explain the standard operating procedure for correctional regarding extortion, maintaining peace, controlling disturbances and contrabands. Extortion is the crime of obtaining money or some other thing of value by the abuse of one’s office or authority. Extortion can occur when an officer becomes close to inmate and brought them something of value that they aren’t supposed to have. Then inmate starts to blackmail the police officer because they know that correctional officer will be held accountable for letting the inmate have something of value that weren’t supposed to have. And as soon as the officer capitulates and gives them a cigarette lighter because it seems like a pretty good guy, the inmate will use that against you…he's asking you to do something illegal. Maintaining peace is when correctional officers and inmates are getting along to an extent. Not all inmates are going to get along with the officers and they you can use different tactics to handle each situation. The do have correctional officer trained to be peace officers to handle certain situations. Controlling disturbances among inmates can be hard when there is no leads. First you have to recognize and reasoning for impending disturbances. Second impending disturbances can manifest because of rumors, mental preparation of officers, and triggering events.
