Awakenings is based on a book with the same title written by Oliver Sacks. It is about a true to life event that occurred in the late 1960s in the Bronx, New York. Robin Williams played the role of Dr. Malcolm Sayer and Robert De Niro played the role of Leonard Lowe, two of the main characters in the movie. The film about a doctor finding a cure for patients who survivors of a epidemic of encephalitis lethargica. The movie is a drama and biographical film. The film starts off with one of the main characters as a child at a park in the Bronx, New York City during 1969. The story mostly focuses on Dr. Malcolm Sayer, a devoted and caring physician and Leonard Lowe who is one of the catatonic patients being handled by Dr. Sayer. This story is about a doctor’s phenomenal work during the 1960s involving a group of patients that survive the 1917 – 1928 epidemic of encephalitis lethargica that he discovers deteriorating in a local hospital in the Bronx, New York City. Suspecting that their symptoms may be related to a severe form of Parkinsonism, he requests for consent from his disbelieving superiors to treat the patients with a drug …show more content…

Also I recommend this to students taking up medicine; because Dr. Sayer is a good example or role model. I do not recommend this to people who gets bored easily and has no appreciation in classics. The MPAA rating of the film is PG – 13. My final word on the film that it is definitely a must watch movie. Because of the lessons it shares, the positive messages, the moving story and the fact that it is a based on a true story. RATING SYSTEM: I give this movie a 4.5 out of 5. It is overall a great drama. It is well balanced because it has the tear-jerking and semi humorous parts. The story is moving and inspirational.
