After reading the screenplay for Rushmore, Bill Murray desperately wanted to be in the movie and even said he would do it for free. According to online sources, Murray was only paid about $9,000 for his role as Herman Blume despite his outstanding portrayal. One can guess that his main reason for taking the lowest pay grade was because he saw the movie for what it actually is: a piece of art. Most movies need to make up for the plot with eccentric costumes or breathtaking backdrops but Wes Anderson’s movie does not. Contrary to other films, Rushmore manages to combine a variety of theatrical techniques that help tell the story.
Dirty Dancing was released in 1987. The film clip I chose was from the end of the season talent show. Johnny Castle (Patrick Swayze) approaches Baby’s (Jennifer Grey) table and tells her father “Nobody puts baby in a corner.”

The Cinematic Techniques of Tim Burton Tim Burton uses many cinematic techniques in all his work. Burton mostly uses cinematic techniques such as lighting, sound, and camera movements/angles. In the essay I will be using Burton’s work Alice Through The Looking Glass, Edward Scissorhands, and Charlie & The Chocolate Factory. In Burton’s movie Edward Scissorhands Burton uses high-key lighting when showing the neighborhood to show how bright, happy, and normal the neighborhood was before Edward was taken into the neighborhood. Burton also uses pan when a character in the movie is walking or driving.
The characters in the
There are many different techniques used in “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”, involving the use of the camera. For example, when the oompa loompas are singing about each naughty child, the scene is shot as a pan or a long shot. By using these techniques, it may show the size of the oompa loompas or their dances to express their emotions together, this attracts the viewers. The use of the camera movements, produces a more interesting effect. Tim Burton knows how to use camera movements to his advantage in all of his films created.
In the novel “The Princess Bride”, William Goldman presents an abridgement of what is proposed to be the classic fairy tale by S. Morgenstern but is actually a novel created entirely on his own. The text is of a romantic love story between two protagonists in the country of Florin, a country which existed before Europe yet after the discovery of the Americas and Australia. Over the course of the novel, Goldman writes a story which strays from the normal parameters of a fairytale. Character design conflicts with the stereotypes and the word choice (Evil Stepmother, etc) is not typical. The timeframe set for the novel and the subplots within are rather ridiculous at times, even for a work of fiction.
The way that the camera would move so it felt like the characters were real allows the audience to become in-touch with their imagination. The camera also does an amazing job at portraying the characters’ personalities. For example, the first time the film introduces the Boss, it’s a clip of him pounding open a nut with a nut cracker. This adds a high level of intimidation to the scene and to the Boss, especially because there’s the sound of the loud crack of the nut popping open. It was also interesting how the director (Gary Sinise) chose to not show the clips of the animals dying such as; the mouse, the pup, and Candy’s dog.
An example of an experimental film, which is very different to Mulholland drive, is Christopher Nolan’s work piece, Memento. The film follows a man name Leonard, who is in search of the man who raped and murdered his wife, as well as damaged his memory. Leonard suffers from amnesia, which is a form of short-term memory loss that prevents him from making any new memories. The story is told by Leonard’s through his eyes, on how he remembers things by writing it all on notes. The viewers are introduced to Leonard in the first scene, when he kills Teddy; the man that he ultimately believed killed his wife.
Moonlight is a story of human relationships and how the social pressures surrounding a person can shape and mould a person’s development and identity. Told in three chapters of Chiron’s life, Moonlight is a complex visual biography of a black man and his search for his place in the world, his sexual identity, and his efforts to navigate the chaos surrounding his upbringing. Circular camera movements are used prominently throughout the film. We are first introduced to this technique when the camera follows Juan as he approaches his drug dealer, who is talking to a buyer. The camera starts revolving around the three subjects in a swirling, smooth motion.
