Most everyone has visited a farm sometime in their life, and everyone has consumed a product coming from a farm. Although, most have done that; they most likely are not thinking about sustainable agriculture. Sustainable agriculture integrates three main goals: environmental health, economic profitability, and providing adequate and healthy food to the public. This idea is helping to insure that future generations are granted with profitable farming and are not lacking in natural resources. Since the beginning, agriculture has changed dramatically, and sustainable agriculture is working to improve it even further. Raising livestock in a pasture, not cramped cages or grassless fields, only results in good. This enables the animals to move freely, graze on a natural diet, engage in normal animal behavior, and avoid stress and diseases associated with improper confinement. Unfortunately, most farms producing food are no longer considered sustainable farms. Around the time of the industrial revolution small farms were overtaken by ill practicing, powerful companies. This resulted in the decreasing of prices but the increasing of environment hazards. Many believe that sustainable agriculture and the economy do not go hand in hand. It is often interpreted that prices will go up and production will go down. Prices may increase subtly, but over time they will decrease as the transition to a sustainable form of farming becomes more prevalent. Another way to look at the economic profit, is the trade off of other beneficial happenings. If sustainable agriculture is practiced, money will be saved in terms of not having to spend it to undo the damage caused by inefficient farming.
