The myth that war is more beneficial than harmful is inaccurate. War not only brings disruption and chaos to society, but it destroys culture and civilizations. War negatively affects millions every day and leaves many dislocated or dead. In short, war cynically affects the humanity of culture through means of ethnic cleansing, dislocation of war victims, and the eradication of a safe haven. Warhawks claim that war benefits the government economically due to the growing military involvement and reaping the resources of a country’s wealth. One example would be the American defense and technology company Lockheed Martin, which estimated a net profit of $2.7 billion in 2011 due to military involvement in the middle east (Ho 1). Another way in which wars have financial benefits is the positive impact it has on the level of national output through employment; it is estimated that in 2011, over $1 billion of military spending alone has created 11,200 jobs both directly and indirectly in the US (Ho 4). Furthermore, the Syrian Civil War has resulted in approximately 6.3 million Syrian refugees internally displaced in Syria and over 4.8 million Syrians have fled Syria. Another key point is that the total death toll is about 500,000 in Syria due to the ongoing conflict, and as a consequence of all the violence, it leaves many families separated (Durando 4). As Filippo Grandi stated: “Syria is the biggest humanitarian and refugee crisis of our time, a continuing cause of suffering for millions which should be garnering a groundswell of support around the world,” (Grandi 12).
