The background information of Fine Points, a short story by Andrea Lee is important because it is the basic information the reader should know in order to understand what will happen in the next plot, it introduces the characters, and tells where the story takes place. The background information that is conveyed by the author in this story is long enough, from line one untill line thirty four, but there are also some background informations that appears on the other lines. The background information introduces us to the two characters named I (the narrator) and Margaret. It also tells the setting where the characters live. The narrator (I) and Margaret are Harvard students that live in the same dormitory, on the fourth floor of Currier House. They have the same size clothing but they are very different in style. The narrator (I) likes to wear jean and black turtleneck, odd little somber-colored tunic, and short pleated skirt that make her looks like an old-fashion girl. The narrator (I) is also a black girl. The evidence that supports this statement is “A few years earlier it might have been possible for me to find the necessary thrill simply in going out with white boys, the forbidden fruit of my mother’s generation,”(line 53). Margaret knows that the narrator (I) often fails in relationship with any men because she never satisfied with her lover since she dreams a perfect lover that impossible to get and because of her appearance.It is relate to the story’s title “Fine Points”. The title “Fine Points” can contains a meaning of someone’s target or it is kind of standardization. The standardization of a man that is dreamed by the narrator (I). The statement “a real kiss-not just daydreams; not an imaginary one” also relates to the story’s theme, that disatisfaction can causes any
