In this riveting story about two friends doing what they love. They experience loss and redemption to get themselves out of many situations. Finnie along with many others suffer many great losses. One thing many people admire about Finnie is his ability to redeem himself and turn a bad situation into a good one. Loss is often viewed as a bad thing, it can lead to many sad/scary feelings and emotions. It can also be a motivational feeling and make you want to do better than before. Finnie Walsh experiences many tragedies throughout this novel. Finnie lives with his father who often neglects to care for him. His brothers have been in and out of jail for most of their lives and rarely appears in his life. Even though they may not be come he has lost major relationships in his life. “Driving home from the hospital after Finnies birth, Mr. Walsh, Mrs. Walsh and Finnie were sideswiped by a transport truck carrying a load of hiking boots. Their car spun out of control and they careened down an embankment and onto the frozen river.” (Pg. 82). Finnie's mother passed away shortly after his birth from drowning in a river. Most of their friendship and the actives they do revolve around hockey. Watching hockey, playing hockey and talking about hockey is what the novel is based on. When Finnie experiences a loss of a hockey player or the chance of playing hockey isn't possible he goes into a deep depression and can't seem to come out of it. It takes motivation and his friends to help him see the bright side of things and when he realizes that his favourite hockey player Pelle Lindberg passes away he misses a game. Knowing Finnie isn't one to miss his games or a practice you can tell that this deeply affects him and his view on hockey.
