The song `Where is the love` by The Black-Eyed Peas and the poem `Fire and Ice` by Robert Frost explored global issues, specifically hate, discrimination, the state of the world, the environment and the end of the world by using poetic devices such as metaphor, alliteration, assonance and rhyme. The song explored war, discrimination, racism, terrorism, violence against children and adults, international unity and love. The poem specifically explored the ways humans react and if they react with fire (emotions and desire) or with ice (hate and violence) and either way that we react destruction will still occur.

They are used in the song to reinforce specific ideas, for example, in the chorus alliteration is used in `children hurting I hear them crying, can you practice what you preaching`. This use of alliteration reinforced the message of violence and hypocrisy and it is repeated in every chorus.
Assonance is also used to draw the audience’s attention to the ideas conveyed through Will.i.am’s verse, for example, in verse 3 the ‘a’ sound is used to highlight the issue of hate and discrimination ‘hate, irate, discriminate, generate, operate’. Frost also uses assonance in his poem Fire and Ice, for example ‘fire, ice, desire, twice, suffice’. The repeated ‘I’ sound reinforces the way that we as people are responsible for the destruction of the world.
Another poetic device used by Black Eyed Peas is similes to show how people today lack morals, values, respect for different races, for example, ‘what`s going on with the world momma, people living like they ain`t got no mommas’.
