The United States witnessed significant changes in the role of the federal government through the transformation of domestic affairs. From the start of the Great Depression to the first Inaugural Address. Both women and middle-class Americans struggled deeply in the search for jobs and to provide for their families. President Franklin D. Roosevelt also wrote the First Inaugural Address to help provide relief and the United States ensured to play a significant role in the opposition to communist ideologies.

Middle-class people are known to fight through their struggles and not ask for help even when needed, however, the Great Depression hit so hard that they had to ask for help. This led to the United States having to get involved and implement programs to help stimulate economic growth and provide relief. The New Deal that was created opened the agency Home Owners’ Loan Corporation, HOLC, which did help, but only temporarily. Many middle-class also sent letters to the President and his wife regarding their situation. Eureka, from Humboldt Country in California, sent a letter expressing her being pregnant and bringing her baby in a “home full of worry and despair,” she emphasizes how her family always “stood on [their] own feet,” and she uses empathy to connect to Mrs. Roosevelt by stating that she is a mother and she understands the crisis they are experiencing and is asking for help with finding her husband, Tommy, a job. This is one letter compared to the many that were sent, some asking for things that they need others asking for jobs

The Great Depression was a “cataclysmic event” that dramatically transformed the way the “national government related to the American public”. President Roosevelt stated that they will start taking action and the primary task is to “put people to work” and treat this task as they “would treat the emergency of war” and he is prepared to take his “constitutional authority, to bring to a speedy adoption”. Due to the Great Depression peak, government intervention was needed and President Roosevelt had to install some hope back to the general public to let them know that they can trust the government to help during this time of need. President Roosevelt did a great job of emphasizing the importance of government intervention and providing a safety net for the citizen through this economic crisis. This speech allowed the United States to slowly emerge from the economic pain of the Depression and become a strong nation altogether.
