In 2012 Ken Burns produced The Central Park Five which narrates the experiences of five teenage boys who were wrongly convicted of the violent rape of a young woman in New York City’s Central Park in April of 1989. Burns builds his thesis, through interviews with various individuals such as former Mayor Koch, journalists from the 80’s and 90’s, historians, defense lawyers, Juror #3, and, of course, the five boys, now men, wrongly imprisoned. He believes that even with the new information which vacated the convictions of these men, New York City as a society has failed to authentically assess the situation and the systemic sin of racism which led to the misuse of justice. Burns begins by illuminating the strains placed on New York City in the

Many people are supported in their homes by people who work along side the health and social care service such as social workers, nursers ,doctor and care givers or they may get support from their family members and friends. An elderly person may choose to stay in their own homes instead of a residential care home while seeking help and support from others, however this can lead to potential opportunities for abuse happening to the person who Is being looked after. When an individual is getting support at home by a carer, the individual being cared for is vulnerable and defenseless and therefor this makes them a target for abuse, another example is abuse by strangers, when an elderly person lives alone they are at risk of people calling at the door and then gaining access to their homes, they may steal items from them or mistreat them or cause intimidation. A person who is vulnerable and living alone are at risk of physical and sexual because there is no one there to stop this abuse from happening.
At Adult Protective Services majority of our work involves investigation of abuse, neglect, and exploitation. At Adult Protective Services our job is to protect the vulnerable elderly population, as well as the population that have disabilities. “Only APS is statutorily authorized and responsible for investigating elder and vulnerable adult abuse and taking steps to protect the victims, and it is generally only APS that helps the most frail and incapacitated older persons”(Quin, 2012, p.68). When abuse is suspected, a case worker will reach out to all parties involved, such as the alleged victim, alleged perpetrator, and all collaterals. Unlike many other professions, case worker are not required to have any written consent to speak with

Nurses in Complex Continuing Care Encountering Ethical Dilemmas of Autonomy and Wellbeing When Patient with Dementia Wants to go Home Bhakti Amin Student # A0622083 Professor S. Cairns NURS 2047 23 March 2018 Introduction Dementia continues to grow as a condition diagnosed among elderly females, researchers have hypothesized that this is due to longer female life expectancy (Podcasy & Epperson, 2016). Allowing a client with dementia to stay in their own can have several benefits such as joy, comfort, socially connected, maintain identity, and have meaning in life; however, in many cases, clients with dementia require complex continuous care (CCC) to support their health and wellness needs and the needs of their family (Lilly
The United States government is doing a surprisingly little amount for the million of elderly who are being abused everyday. An affective abuse policy increasing elderly protection services is immensely needed. The public should also be informed about elderly abuse, and the individuals who commit the crime of abusing the elderly should have stricter punishments. People in society can help towards pushing for a more goal driven elder justice policy. In the article, “The Elderly Must Be Protected From Abuse,” author Robert B. Blancato explains seven goals which should be addressed towards elderly justice.
Hillier and Barrow (2015), associate problems of caregiving with the responsibility itself, the caregivers personal health, role strains, strained family relationships, ect. With all of this strain on an informal caregiver it seems most beneficial to the caregiver and the elderly individual to consider admittance in to an assisted living facility. Once a basis has been established as to why an elderly person is admitted in to an assisted living facility, further insight shall be established to denote what is considered elder abuse. In this movie, Life and Death in Assisted Living Facilities, several

Safeguarding is protecting people's health, wellbeing and human rights, and enabling them to live free from harm, abuse and neglect. Abuse comes in many forms, for example, physical, sexual, verbal, financial, emotional, discriminatory abuse and neglect and working in substance misuse it is important for me to protect individuals against safeguarding issues, such as blood borne viruses, drug awareness, drug dealing, sex working, domestic violence, neglect to others and self-neglect. I have worked with vulnerable adults, who are or may be in need of community care services due to mental or other disability, age or illness, and who are or may be unable to take care of themselves, or unable to protect themselves against significant harm or exploitation. Safeguarding adults involves protecting their rights to live in safety, free from abuse and neglect. I have worked in partnership to prevent the risk of abuse or neglect and stopped it from happening.
1a: Residential Care and Institutional Care may seem similar because they both provide services for the sick and needy, but they differ in other significant aspects. Residential Care offers personalized service, lodging, meals and assistance with daily living activities to groups of persons who are in need. It can be deemed a home away from home, where the adults who reside there, if some of them are well enough; they can also be visiting residents and are able to participate in everyday activities, whilst they can make choices for themselves. Therefore, a residential care home is a place where persons would have chosen to be because of the liberality and accessibility of the facility. 1b: Institutional Care replicates Residential care,
In the UK, over five hundred thousand abuse against elderly people occurred each year. These abuses can occur anywhere, including in someone own home, residential home or hospital. Both older men and women can be at risk of abuse, though the majority of victims are women over the age of 70’s. There are five common types of abuse; physical, psychological, financial, sexual abuse and neglect. Where does elderly abuse to place Elder abuse tends to take place where the senior lives: most often in the home where abusers are often adult children, other family members such as grandchildren, or spouses/partners of elders.
“Social welfare is a system, sometimes referred to as an institution, comprising a wide variety of policies, programs and services that help people meet their basic needs” (Suppes & Wells, 2013:97). South Africa in the previous government during the times of apartheid had very little intervention in the provision and funding of social welfare, services and social security, it saw the family and the private market as natural mechanisms for meeting needs (residual approach). The present social welfare scene is significantly different from the past, South Africa adopted social development to social welfare, and it is concerned with harmonizing social and economic development it promotes participation in development i.e. creating opportunities
