One of the many reasons people shy away from treating substance abuse and attaining sober living especially in Manhattan is because, they cannot fathom having fun without alcohol or whatever substance they were previously using.
Under normal circumstances, events and experiences such as eating out or spending time with family and friends are enough stimulation to the brain that translates as fun. However, addiction disrupts this system because repeated substance abuse causes your brain to stop responding to regular stimuli. 1. Learn something new: Remember that skill you always wanted to learn? Go for it. Learn to skate, swim, ride a bike or even drive etc. Take your brain through the stimulating process of learning something new. It reduces your cravings for the substance you have abused during your withdrawal period and opens you up to new experiences.
2. Visit new places: Go on a road trip, go to museums, the local zoo, park, sporting events, beaches, fashion shows, operas etc. Visit dry bars in Manhattan; they are the new rave. These bars provide for those who do not drink in a social environment similar to those offered by traditional bars.
3. Meet people: Connect with more people especially little children and elderly people; you would be surprised at the things you can learn from them. Their outlook and perspective may give you numerous reasons to smile or laugh.
4. Connect More With Family and Friends: After taking time out to work on treating your addiction, connect more with family and friends. Knowing that you had the courage to work on yourself and pass through the ordeal brings closure.
