John Steinbeck is a very famous author for his books about common people during the Great Depression. Steinbeck has written multiple great books including Dubious Battle, Of Mice and Men and The Grapes of Wrath. He also wrote the short story Flight which was published in 1938.Steinbeck tends to write about social and economic issues that is happening in the lives of everyday people. In Flight Steinbeck writes about a young man Pepe Torres who is trying to find his way into manhood. When his mother Mama Torres ask him to go into town Pepe kills a man and must go into the mountains to avoid the people trying to catch him. As Pepe is in the mountains he makes childish mistakes leading to his death. Symbolism, Characterization, and theme have a big part in Flight as Pepe continues his flight to manhood. John Steinbeck in “Flight” shows how difficult it is for a young man to achieve manhood and make hard decisions.
