In the story Flu, Faye is sick and can’t go to work. When she feels better, she can go back to work. When she goes back to work, she meets Aldo. Aldo has never met Faye before, even though they are co-workers. They met each other because Aldo started a conversation. Then they begin to have feelings for each other. That leads to a relationship betwixt the two of them. Stuart Dybek uses their love for each other as an example to show that no matter how pathetic someone can feel, love can heal a physical disease.

When Aldo and Faye are questioned about how they fell in love, they always answer the same way. They say, “It all started with the flu”. What they mean by that is that after Faye recovered from the flu, Aldo noticed her in a way he hadn’t before. The flu led to Aldo to look at Faye in a whole new light, noticing she was very beautiful. And a relationship started because of that. In this specific instance, a physical illness can have the healing antidote of love.

At first, Faye is fed up with being sick. She views it as a malcontent, as is stated in the story, “...Days of nausea,....A fast of toast and tea, and dreams that came and went like migraines.” However, she grasps that getting sick is part of life and learning how to deal with the symptoms is something she will have to choose how to counter to positively or negatively. Although being sick was really hard on Faye, it caused something far better than not being sick entirely.
