The films An Diog is Faide and Fluent Dysphasia depict the struggle that Irish have to go through to preserve their old language (Gaelic). The film Fluent Dysphasia is about a native of Dublin who was hit with a football on the head, and wake up realizing that he doesn’t speak or understand English anymore, and becomes fluent in Gaelic instead. His daughter who was studying Gaelic becomes his translator, and explains his situation. Similarly, An Diog is Faide is based on the story of Sonnie Murphy who started from the bottom as a farm worker, but ended up competing in the Los Angeles 1932 Olympics, despite being told by his poor parents that “it’d cost a fortune to get you there.” Although the two films appeared to tell different stories, each film depicts the stereotype that Irish women and men are beautiful, and use such stereotype to preserve the Irish language and tradition.

Despite being mainly in English, the main plot in the film Fluent Dysphasia is the scene, in which the main character got hit with a football, and becomes fluent in Gaelic. In order to show the importance of the Irish culture and tradition, Fluent Dysphasia include important details such as the Gaelic language and football, which is the Irish’s most favored sport (according Sport Programs on TV-Early Years in Module 2). Similarly, the film An Diog is Faide is mainly in Gaelic, with English subtitle, and clearly shows the farming and villager-like lifestyle of the Irish people. An Diog is Faide further shows the main character as a handsome young man, supporting the stereotype that Irish men and women are good-looking. The stereotype that Irish women and men are alluring is included in Fluent Dysphasia and An Diog is Faide in order to emphasize the significance of the Gaelic language and
