How would you feel, if you food was prepared in dirty unsanitary conditions? This is how the food industry used to be, before striked laws were created after Upton Sinclair and several others discovered the dark secrets of the food industry, and what they did not tell you about the food that many people ate. On September 20, 1878, in Maryland Baltimore Upton Sinclair was born.
This shows how much and more food we are able to get due to the new technology and techniques that industrial farms are taking on. Another reason why industrial farms are better for the U.S. is because they are able to turn crop waste into electricity and other good uses. The military-industrial complex is the relationship between the nation’s military and defense industries, which was boosted greatly during World War II and previous wars. In our modern food industry, we deal with the “food industrial complex”. Michael Pollan, in his novel, The Omnivore’s Dilemma Part 1: “Industrial Corn”, speaks out about the problems in our food industry today. Eisenhower’s concerns of misplaced power, short term thinking, and imbalances in solving problems regarding the military-industrial complex are reflected in Pollan’s Part 1.
In the United States today, a large part of the average person’s life is food. Each individual consumes nearly one ton of food each year, but never knows what they are truly putting into their body. Upton Sinclair’s novel, The Jungle, was one of the earliest works that provided people an insight to the production of their food. The novel was originally written to show the mistreatment of the workers, typically immigrants, but instead resulted in the passing of the Pure Food Act of 1906. These cost cuts do make food cheaper for americans but it also puts their safety at risk.

The standardization of fast food reconstructed the food preparation system. McDonald’s Speedee Service System introduced manufacturing production lines into a restaurant, transforming the farming into a food industry. (Knox, 341) Even though most food sold in supermarkets and restaurants is cultivated on corporate lands, surprisingly, farming is still believed to be a family business with locals living in small farmhouses.
For many people the ideal meal is inexpensive, fast, and tastes good. When purchasing these quick and inexpensive meals we put very little thought into how that food was actually produced. Food Inc is a documentary produced by filmmaker Robert Kenner and Eric Schlosser, author of Fast Food Nation, to bring awareness to Americans about the industrial side of food production. Kenner wants us to question how much we really know about the food we have been feeding to our families and to ourselves. He interviews various experts such as food advocates, farmers and authors who have written books about the food industry.
Action must be taken by the food industry in order to start eliminating the problems that are causing the society to deteriorate. There are countless health issues within America that continue to grow due to the fact that the food industry is not regulating the food being provided and sole enough. Obesity and being overweight are one of the many social issues that can be linked back to the food industry. While it is true that there are cases of obesity and being overweight due to lack of exercise or genetics, it is primarily the food that cause people to gain excess weight. So many foods nowadays contain surplus amounts of calories, fats, and sugar which have a direct correlation to weight gain.
