I attended that Klamath panel on Food Security and found it to be a very interesting discussion. I wish that they had been able to spend more time on questions and discussion but feel that I learned a lot from what I did hear. The argument that the status quo has caused food injustice has strong support and seems to be well rooted in fact. The panel its self was grate because it had representative from a several different organizations and tribes which allowed us to get a good view of the problem from various prospective. One thing which I thing could have improved the panel was if they had someone who thought that there was not a food security problem to prevent any bias. The panel and supporting literature provide strong evidence that the US Government has been denying the tribes of the Klamath River access to many of their traditional dietary elements and forcing them to eat processed and unhealthier food. It was unclear from the panel exactly what has been the effect of the decrees in food sovereignty, but after reading the supporting literature I now know that do to the dramatic change of diet of the local tribes they have had a dramatic spike in the numbers of cases of diabetes …show more content…
Several of the panel members admitted to braking the law so that they could provide there families with their native diet. Another thing that was mentioned by the panel members was that even if they are allowed access to a resource such as deer or salmon they often cannot get to it because it is behind a locked gate. By denying the tribes of the Klamath River access to the native food sources they have forced them to go to stores and buy food which is often very difficult do to the fact that much of the Klamath is very remote and has little to no access to a super market or
