The Roles of Personal Ethics This present paper examined morals, values, and ethics utilized within a forensic psychology specialty area, and the relationship and distinction between each terms ability to influence ethical decisions consistent with a professional’s values as well as discuss the importance of personal ethics. The Ethics Codes (2010a), however, that underlie principles and standards not only guide professionals through gray areas not provided by general standards (Doverspike, 2015). These rules also provide a mixture across a continuum to clarify and assist in how to resolve an ethical dilemma in practice (Bush et al., 2006). These rules, however, applies to those in many professions, however, must consider ethical principles prior to making decisions. Example: A victim advocate is required to maintain a level of confidentiality as part of their profession in which to disclose information an authorization is required from the client. In this respect, I have an ethical obligation to protect this information because policies and procedures were put into place to protect victims. The similarities of values, morals, and ethics are one’s ability to know or understand what is right or wrong, fair, or unfair. Reiss (1999) goes further to explain how ethics ideals and standards help legitimize our activities and moral choices (Chowdhury, 2016). Similarly, The differences lie in the theories, philosophies, and different levels of knowledge each term possess (Chowdhury, 2016). The distinction between ethics and values is that ethics is a set of rules that comes from the workplace or society. In contrast, values come from within and are more personal than ethics. The distintion between ethics and morals is framed by right and wrong principles (Moral) and what is good or bad (Ethics). Personal ethics refers to values created over time such as those acquired from parents or family members at birth, who we form bonds with as well as what is learned from these relationships. As a future forensic psychology professional, the importance of personal ethics lies in the individualized beliefs of the
