The book peace like a river is a story of a young boy named Ruben land with breathing problems, Davy a runaway murderer, and swede, the naive little sister of Ruben and Davy. Ruben witnesses many miracles preformed by his father, Jeremiah. Through out the story Jeremiah performs miracles to protect his family from death or unfortunate situations. While reading peace like a river I noticed that many things were added into the story by the author in ways or spots that seemed random, surely it wasn't random thought, was it?

In the short story The Examination Day, the author Henry Seslar used foreshadowing and suspense to advance the plot of the story by making the reader interested in what the exam is and what is going to take place. In the story, it says “‘Dad,’ he said, ‘how far away is the sun?’ ‘Five thousand miles,’ his father said” (Seslar 1). This example combines the use of foreshadowing and suspense by making the reader wonder why his dad is telling him the wrong answers. He also foreshadows that they are trying to make him less smart by lowering his intelligence so he doesn't get killed.
Throughout this novel, we are able to see little hints at a bigger truth. Author Amber Mcbride uses many different literary devices to help tell the story of this book, but what about the use of foreshadowing? Stephen King 's most powerful use of foreshadowing kicks in when, Donatti asks Morrison about his family, opening the readers imagination of the type of treatment that Morrison might recieve. Because smoking cigarettes is talked about throughout the story, for Stephen King it symbolizes the slow distruction of the family. When King writes " Your wife gets the rabbit trick, not you" here Morrison is being warned byt Donatti that if he smokes his wife who he "loves" will get the consequences

Ambrose Bierce’s story “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” has instances of foreshadowing that allude to the death of Peyton Farquhar before the story reaches the climactic point of telling of his fate.
