In "The Scarlet Ibis" by James Hurst, the author uses foreshadowing to predict Doodle's death. To begin, in the first paragraph of “The Scarlet Ibis'' by James Hurst, he begins by talking about “graveyard flowers”, and the phrase “speaking softly the names of our dead” (Hurst, 1) that could foreshadow a death near in the story. It foreshadows because graveyard flowers and the “names of our dead” are words that are usually associated with death, and the beginning of the story took place years after Doodle had been gone. In addition, Doodle had always been scared of being left behind which can mean he was scared of death, the text states, “Doodle was frightened of being left.”

One symbol in “The Scarlet Ibis” is the casket built for Doodle as a baby. According to the text, “‘And before I’ll help you down from the loft, you’re going to have to touch it.’ ‘I won’t touch it,’ he said sullenly.” (paragraph 10, The Scarlet Ibis) it seems as if Brother knows what is going to happen in the near future because he denied Doodle of coming back down until he touched the coffin. There is a reason Doodle was so reluctant to reach out and touch the casket that was built for him as a baby.
James Hurst uses suspense, characterization, and imagery in the “Scarlet Ibis” to convey that pride is a wonderful/terrible thing, a seed that bears two vines life and death. The author uses suspense to convey the message that the reader is thinking about what will happen to doodle. This is seen when doodle said “brother brother don’t leave me” (441). This example states that doodle does not like being alone.

This paragraph basically described the change I will have on the ending of the story “The Scarlet Ibis”. I will change the dead of Doodle in the storm to founding the gold pot of leprechaun after the storm under the rainbow. The gold pot was delivered by a scarlet ibis of leprechaun to Brother and Doodle, which will change the meaning of the scarlet ibis from death to wealth. The dialogue will be changed a lot to match the story. After found the gold, it turns out to be a fortune teller wizard named Gdong telling him the fortune that will happen to him and Doodle at next year’s spring.
