This piece “Autumn Landscape” is an oil painting on canvas by Robert Ducanson in 1864. It is on Wilson College Moodle website in the Art Appreciation course under 18th and 19th century slides. This is a landscape painting displaying a multitude of colors usually seen in autumn, when nature forms a picturesque vista. The colors, value, lines, and motion impart a blissful look which this painting portrays this in an exceptional way.

The primary colors present are red, seen in some tree leaves, blue in the sky and yellow in the leaves of other trees. Other mixes of colors are also seen. There is an abundance of secondary colors including green in trees and orange in some leaves as well as tertiary colors like yellow-orange, red-orange, and yellow-green in various trees. Overall the colors give the piece a bright look. The painting presents harmony of color in the various colors of the trees, blending with the rocks alongside the glazed appearance of the stream, in the center of the picture. There is some limited shading behind the brown colored rocks and large boulders spread alongside the stream. The piece also has clouds and mountains in grey. There is a glimmer of sunshine that bestows a lighter tint on the right side of the picture. On the left side the trees have a murkier appearance due to the absence of sunshine on that area of the painting. In the background, the mountains disappear into the skyline in the hazy fog. The darker clouds blot out most of the sunlight, with some breaks in them. Together, these impart a serene look splashed with the striking colors of fall, on the
