In Found by Margaret Peterson Haddix, the main character, Jonah Skidmore, had a sister named Katherine. Katherine’s supportive and calming qualities made her considered to be a best friend. Her best friend qualities were exemplified when Jonah and his best friend Chip went through some hardships. Jonah and his best friend, Chip Winston, were both adopted. One day, Chip and Jonah each received a letter stating, “YOU ARE ONE OF THE MISSING,” (Haddix 20). At first they figured it was just a prank, until they received another letter saying, “BEWARE! THEY’RE COMING BACK TO GET YOU,” (Haddix 56). During the twenty-first century, in Liston, Ohio, Jonah, Chip, and Katherine live their lives. One of the main settings in the novel, Found, was Chip’s basement. Chip’s basement was an ideal setting in the novel, and it was a place that would be considered a place to visit. Visiting Chip’s basement would definitely be considered, especially since it is someone’s home, there is a good environment, and it’s comfortable. Chip’s basement had a computer, so they could research and investigate. Also, it was easy for Katherine and Jonah to get to, and not mysterious to keep the parents from getting suspicious. The basement was also private to keep the parents from finding out, and made them think that the kids were just hanging out down there.
