The Founding Fathers created this great nation. When they did, they needed a foundation, a great strong city to start the pyramid of the future world power it is today. That foundation is a mid-eastern city called Washington District of Columbia, or D.C. for short. The story of this fine city is a long one, filled with history and events, which changed the world we know today. As our nation’s capital, the history of Washington, D.C. is important from the location, to the layout of the city, and the creation of its monuments and museums, which all give testimony to our great nation. Our national city’s story started on October 19, 1781, when the British army surrendered at Yorktown (Burke 20). At that time, the youthful nation proved its strength. It started as an idea from L’Enfant in 1791. A stone from Bethlehem became the foundation stone. The construction of the National Cathedral began in 1907 and took eighty-three years to build, finally finishing in 1990 (History Staff). Another great historic site is Ford’s Theatre. It is where John Wilkes Booth shot Abraham Lincoln on April 14, 1865. Visitors can listen to the story of the night and sit in the same theatre. Sometimes there are even plays for tourists to watch (Schiller) The second tallest memorial is the Washington Monument at 555 feet. The construction of the Washington Monument began in 1848 and after a twenty-five year break; the builders finally completed it in 1884. The memorial is made of 90,854-ton marble. Robert Mills designed the memorial, which is comprised of 90,854 tons of marble (Curlee 27-28). The Franklin Roosevelt memorial is a park. It has many benches.
