While Frankenstein (1818) sees the literary double as a supernatural manifestation outside the control of Victor Frankenstein, later 19th century novels describe the creation of a double as deliberating act. It is presented as a choice of the character who wishes to eliminate any internal separation. Accordingly, the characters presented appear to be rational as they make a conscious choice.
