The novel opens with Robert Walton, an ambitious explorer, looking for a way to reach the Atlantic through the Artic region. His crew finds a half-dead man on a sheet of floating ice and rescues him. Victor Frankenstein recovers enough to tell Walton his tragic story. Victor, his siblings and Elizabeth, an orphan adopted by his parents, are raised in the Frankenstein family’s estate in Geneva, Switzerland. Victor gets interested in the sciences and is preparing to leave for the university of Ingolstadt in Germany when his mother and Elizabeth become ill with scarlet fever. Their mom dies but Elizabeth recovers. Victor goes off to university where he meets his professors: M. Krempe and M. Waldman. For two years, Victor does well in his studies, but he becomes obsessed with his plan to reanimate the dead. He creates a giant from body parts found in morgues and cemeteries. Using a combination of alchemy, chemistry and electricity, he succeeds in giving life to the creature. Instead of jubilation, Victor feels guilty about bringing usurping God’s role. He makes no provision for taking care of the hideous-looking creature and spurns it out of fear and disgust. He runs away from it and finds solace in drinking. The creature wanders in the countryside. Victor’s best friend, Henry Clerval, enrolls in the university, finds Victor in terrible health and takes care of him. …show more content…
