Consequences of Playing God
Mary Shelley’s book Frankenstein also known as the Modern Prometheus tells the story of Victor trying to play God. Victor states “A new species would bless me as its creator and source; many happy and excellent natures would owe their being to me” (Shelley 39). Which shows his desire to be worshiped his creation playing the role of God. Scientific discoveries are a result of man’s thirst for and dedication to acquiring knowledge, information, and power. Scientific discoveries are a result of man’s urge to discover the unknown and obtain new knowledge. Even as a young child Victor is always isolated in the pursuit of his desired knowledge. Victor is a complete narcissist because he is self-centered is his everyday especially when it comes to his own intelligent. Sandra Swart argues that one’s knowledge is never satisfied, stating “In essence, it remained a cautionary tale about scientific egotism. As Crichton pondered through the character of Dr Ian Malcolm (the only known rock 'n roll mathematician): "Scientists are actually preoccupied with accomplishment. So they are focused on whether they can do something. They never stop to ask if they should do something.... Discovery, they believe, is inevitable. So they just try to do it first. That's the game in science" (Crichton 1997: 294; my italics)” (Swart). Which is shown in Victor’s egotistical ways, where he challenges himself with new knowledge. In volume 1 chapter 2, Victor’s professor makes the connection of old study of philosophy to the modern philosophy that influenced Victor to pursue the creation of life stating that “So much has been done, exclaimed the soul of Frankenstein—more, far more, will I achieve; treading in the steps already marked, I will pioneer a new way, explore unknown powers, and unfold to the world the deepest mysteries of creation”(Shelley 29).
