Critical Analysis The Modern Prometheus or Frankenstein has the most literary value for Shelley’s writing in the Romanticism era. With Frankenstein holding the most debates and topics, Shelley’s other literary works have beared nothing of importance. Critics generally agree that Shelley’s “five later novels are characterized by awkward plotting and verbosity; all the same, most of them have some element of literary value,” (Gale Shelley 4). Frankenstein is definitely and will be Mary Shelley’s best work of art due to the elements of Romanticism and Prometheanism. Most critics agree that “Shelley's depiction of a godless world in which science and technology have gone awry continues to be a powerful metaphor for the modern age,” (Gale Shelley 5). Her point of view of the world perfectly fits into the genre of Romanticism. The main characters have been thought of multiple interpretations: the monster being the alienation of modern humanity and the creator, Victor Frankenstein, being the sin going against social order. Frankenstein has dominate many of the topics Romanticism, including man’s destiny or fate, social attitude of society, man’s responsibility, and man’s will or strength to do. Frankenstein’s destiny or fate was first to pass the limitations of science, and in the end construct a monster made up of different parts. Frankenstein then realized he must destroy the monster before he loses everyone close to him. Most people who met the monster rejected him due to his appearance except an old blind man who understood the monster only needed to be loved by others. Social attitude rejected him because of how different the monster was compared to most normal people.
