In chapter six of the novel, Frankenstein's Cat, the topic of physically modifying an animal for advanced researches in prostheses is analyzed. The audience is introduced to a dolphin named Winter, who lost her tail in an a incident where it was caught in a crab trap,which resulted in an amputation. Winter was taken to a facility known as the Clearwater Marine Aquarium where she was cared for, and the idea for developing a prosthesis for her began. Two prosthetist by the name of Carrol and Strzempka immediately took action and began developing Winter a new tail by creating a prosthesis that would be snug on her slippery skin and would be comfortable enough so that it would not bother her when she was swimming.
