Prior to 1929, the United States seemed unstoppable. The US was starting to splinter, with most citizens not being able to detect what was coming. Everyone was encouraged to invest in the stock market; little did Americans know that the market was about to crash. The stock market hit its lowest point on October 29, 1929, also known as Black Tuesday. In this time of need, America looked towards its President, Herbert Hoover, who unfortunately had little to offer the American people. His pessimistic outlook and withering appearance contributed greatly to his loss in the election.
Through America's new President, Franklin D Roosevelt, the American people saw a renewed determination to combat the depression. His First New Deal was very successful in implementing policies to release America from the depressions grasp. However, The Second New Deal was not effective in restoring economic security, due to the rise of radicalism, a split in the Democratic Party and the President losing the political capital he walked into office with. In Roosevelt’s inaugural address, he stated, “Our greatest primary task is to put people to work. This is no unsolvable problem if we face it wisely and courageously,” He put in place a series of programs to provide employment for the 25% of Americans who were jobless, but the overall depression was continuing. Congress was supportive of Roosevelt's call for change and even backed him when he requested things that they did not agree with, such as offsetting Veterans benefits. During Roosevelt's first 100 days, he produced a remarkable amount of recovery programs, financial reforms, and regulations that would help Americans get back on their feet.
