When the State of Franklin failed in 1789 it demonstrated the weaknesses of the Articles of Confederation. For example, when the State of Franklin failed it did not collect the people’s taxes. When this happened the State of Franklin ceased to exist anymore. According to the text,”The state collapsed as laws went unforced, taxes were not collected, and courthouses failed to meet in the state 's final 15 months before they ceased to exist”(paragraph 6).
Shays Rebellion served as the final nail in the coffin for the Articles of Confederation. Although the Articles of Confederation was America's first national document, it came with many weaknesses. One of the major weaknesses was that the federal government was too weak and therefore could not enforce laws. The Continental Congress borrowed money to fight in both the Revolutionary War and the French and Indian War therefore were in debt.

I must admit when reading The Way to Wealth the first time I was the less sophisticated reader, seeing it as merely a collection of practical proverbs, but after reading Sullivan’s essay I see how much more Franklin meant for his writing to be.

As it applies to the Articles of Confederation there were many weaknesses in the way it went about governing the United States. For one, the loose federation of the states was too weak to act as a foundation to be considered or act as a central government. In addition the state legislatures had too much power and in turn had the ability to influence economic issues of all kinds. This strong legislature is the same one that allowed for mob ruling and actions by debtors. The Articles of confederation were also weak because the required congress to have all 13 colonies in agreement when a new tax was to be passed.

The Articles of the Confederation was the first government constitution that the United States used, and, although there were strength like the Northwest Ordinance of 1787, there were major weaknesses of the Articles of the Confederation like the following: requiring 9 out of the 13 colonial votes from the representatives from different states to pass a law; having no executive and judicial branch; and the federal government being unable to impose tax revenue onto the states. Such flaws would eventually lead to the Constitution and the repeal of the articles, for the Constitution was a measure to fix the problems of the articles with a stronger government that allowed them to impose taxes and and implement new laws for a more effective government.

The Articles of Confederation was written when the United States was a fairly new country, and from the people wanting to create a different government from the king of England. Although this document respected individual rights, it was too loose of a document that could drive the country to success. After revising what they had created, the founding father of the us the created the us constitution. It was more strict, but still valued peoples rights.
In one hand, the Articles of Confederation had a weak central government, differing form the strong central government in the Constitution. The Constitution’s government had a structure of three different branches; the legislative, executive, and judicial branch; unlike the Articles of Confederation that had no structure whatsoever. The events and ideas that led to the belief in 1786 and 1787 that the Articles of Confederation was not working well, was the fact that America did not have a president, Congress did not have the power to collect taxes, and every state had its own money. The nation did not have a president and the actions of Congress could not be enforced. Since the states were self-governing, they did what they believed was best for the state and not the country. Congress did not have the authority to create laws and states had to approve laws in order for them to be passed.
