Freak the Mighty Explanatory Essay “Don’t judge a book by it’s cover”, this phrase first appeared in 1944 in the American journal “American Speech”. This idiom means to not judge a person or object based on their physical appearance. In the novel “Freak the Mighty” written by Rodman Philbrick, a common theme is to not judge people based on what they look like.

The protagonist of this novel is Maxwell Kane, by the time he’s in eighth grade he’s already the size of a grown man.
