On the 7th of August, 1928, Fred Brooks was found deceased in Coniston Station in Central Australia. The murder weapon, a traditional Aboriginal weapon, was found nearby with traces of Fred Brook’s blood on it. Two Aboriginal men, Padygar and Arkikra, were arrested for the killing, but soon stood trial in Darwin and were found innocent. Brook’s killer ended up being another man, Kamalyarrpa Japanangka. He was a suspect because of an Aboriginal eye-witness saw him attempting, and succeeding, to kill Fred Brooks. Brook’s was previously living in Coniston Station, before his death, at a waterhole called Yurrkuru. The main reason for the Coniston Massacre was that Aboriginal people got offended because their waterholes were being destroyed by cattle, fences being taken down and ruined, and their women and children were being taken and used as wives or servants for the white people.
The relation between black and white people revolved around the environment’s capability to uphold different population numbers.
Before the first attack, there were many previous attacks on white men in Central Australia because of the same problem that is caused by treating people differently due to, for example, the colour of their skin and their background.
Attacks by Aboriginal people were frequent on settlers and were taking place since the arrival of cattle in the same area of Brook’s murderer during the 1870s.
The situation continued to make increase the strain in the relationships between the settlers and Aboriginal people so much easier for competing for the same resources.
Aboriginal witnesses of the murder suggest Brooks was killed because he breached the Aboriginal marriage law. Brooks did not have an Aboriginal wife and was not known to have any close relationships with any women of that culture.
